Explain to the children that today they are going to pretend that they are the boy from the film and that they have discovered a black hat in the middle of a forest. They will use drama to help them understand how the boy must have felt. Play this section of the film and ask the children to listen to the way that the boy places the hat on his head. He placed it neatly on his head. Delighted with what he’d found. Ask the children to remind you about what we know about the boy so far. He lives in an old forest cabin with his mute grandmother. He is lonely, young and quite ordinary. We know that the boy has an ordinary and lonely life. How do you think he would feel if he found a black hat in the forest? Play the start of the clip and discuss the setting. What do they know about it? How would they move through a forest, what might be on the ground and around them? What does the clip say the boy liked about the forest? How could we show this to the audience?


Give yourself time to get together ideas for your performance and then perform your version of finding the hat to your parents. Do they know what you are doing at each time? Do they know how you feel at each part? 

This acting should be silent, like miming.
